Why Does My Bra Leave Bruse Marks on My Back

Our bra fitting specialists here at Bits of Lace get many questions about what a properly fitting bra should feel like. One of the biggest questions we get is if the red marks left behind on the skin are normal or a sign to look for another bra. The answer is a little bit more complicated than you might think. In this post, we'll discuss why bras leave marks on your skin, and what they could mean for your fit.

Bra lines can be a normal consequence of a well-fitting bra—or they could be a sign that your particular bra isn't a good fit for your body. Here are some tips and tricks to help you figure out if what you're experiencing is normal or if it's time to order a new bra.

Friction 101 – Some Marks Are Normal

Because you will wear your bra for several consistent hours throughout the day, it's normal to have some red marks when you remove your bra. If you have a bra that fits well enough to be supportive, then we would actually expect you to have a few lines by the end of the day.

It's the same thing that happens when you wear a hair tie around your wrist or a pair of socks throughout the day. The line is visible, but it doesn't hurt. The same is true with your bra. Your skin may be imprinted from lace or mesh designs, or you may have back lines where your bra connects. Nothing to worry about here.

Time To Say Goodbye

If you love the support of your bra, feel comfy all day long, notice that your breasts are perkier, raised and separated and you have no other complaints—then your bra lines are probably just normal results of your busy day. BUT, if you have any of the following, it may be time to say bye-bye to your bad bra:

  • Poking or prodding from wires, straps or buttons
  • Intense strap lines from breasts that are unsupported
  • Blistering or bruising from the back because of a bra that is too tight
  • Chaffing under the arms from bras that are too tight on the side
  • Underwire that cuts into your ribs causing discomfort

All of the above are tell-tale signs that your bra isn't the right fit for you. It's very important that you listen to your body. If you feel like it's not the right bra, then it's not the right bra.

Get The Right Fit

If your bra is uncomfortable and producing unsightly marks on your skin, it could be a sign of a poor fit. We have plenty of resources on our site to help you understand the proper way to fit a bra. Explore these articles for more info:

  • Bra Fitting Guide – Learn how to fit your bra, and identify common fitting issues and solutions.

Try A Rotation

Your bra fit may also change as time goes by or for your different activities. You wouldn't want to wear the same bra when you exercise (sports bras) that you wear on a nice date night. And you don't want to wear the same bra everyday either. We recommend having a few good fitting bras that you can rotate between. You may also need to upgrade your bra if you've gained or lost weight, if you're pregnant or nursing, or if you simply need a style update.
